Edition 2 of ISO/IEC 20000 Parts 1 and 2 plus new parts

The standard continues to undergo a process of refinement managed via work group 25 of the ISO/IEC joint technical committee 1.  It is focused on clarifying the content of edition 1 of the standard (as the current edition was fast tracked from the BS 15000 standard), bringing the standard up to date with the latest industry developments and ensuring alignment with other related standards such as the ISO 9000 series and ISO/IEC 27000 series.

The current predictions for the new editions are as follows :

  • Part 1
    • Edition 2 launch date expected around the middle of 2011
    • *** this could be earlier - possibly even 2010 - awaiting the feedback from the ISO/IEC work group 25 meeting taking place in May 2010 ***
    • Includes service management system requirements
  • Part 2
    • Edition 2 launch date expected around the end of 2011
    • Includes guidance on implementation of service management systems
  • Part 3
    • Edition 1 was published on 1st November 2009
    • Includes guidance on scope definition and applicability of ISO/IEC 20000-1 (Part 1)
  • Part 4
    • Edition 1 launch date expected by the end of 2010
    • It is a "Process Reference Model (PRM)" including business case development ideas, initiating an ISO/IEC 20000 certification based project and a framework for prioritizing and managing the service management activities
  • Part 5
    • Edition 1 was published on 26th April 2010
    • It is an "Exemplar Implementation Plan" including information on each process' purpose/outcomes/lifecycle, the relationships between the processes and answering the question "how do we do it?"
  • Part 8
    • Edition 1 launch date expected during 2011
    • It is a "Process Assessment Model (PAM)" including defining the conditions for an assessment against the standard and a framework for service management capability
    • Why part 8 and not part 6?  This PAM will be included with other PAMs that are numbered in ISO/IEC 15504, the next part available in that series is 8.

New pocket guide

Following on from his very successful itSMF International endorsed publication "Implementing ISO/IEC 20000 - The Roadmap", PRO-ATTIVO's head of consulting practice, David Clifford, has finalized an up-to-date pocket guide on the standard which is also available for distribution globally (UK/USA).  Early review comments have been :

  • "Reading through the book, it is amazing to see the amount of information provided on the Standard in what is meant to be a “pocket guide” or “reference tool”.  In this book it is also interesting to see how David manages to communicate the details of the Standard (the purpose, the scope, the application and its relationship with other standards) with such simplicity." Felix Osague - Schlumberger Information Solutions
  • "It will be a great resource, succinct, up-to-date, well exampled and easily applicable to ISO20k training courses." - Suzanne van Hove, SED-IT and itSMF USA board member
The book was formally launched at the Service Desk Show which took place in the UK from the 27th to 28th April 2010.
